Solar in Texas
For many Texas homeowners, yes, but the details depend on who supplies your power. Texas has no statewide net metering, so in deregulated areas your buyback plan matters as much as your panels. Texas also exempts the value solar adds to your home from property tax, and long grid outages have made batteries a big part of going solar here.
Tax treatment varies. Consult a tax professional.
Buyback
Texas doesn't have statewide net metering. What you earn for extra solar depends on whether you live in a deregulated area or are served by a city utility or co-op.
In most of Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston and other competitive areas, your retail electricity provider decides what it pays for exported solar. Buyback plans range from fixed credits to wholesale-based rates, and some plans don't pay at all, so choosing the right plan matters.
Austin Energy credits solar through its Value of Solar rate, 12.89 cents per kWh from October 2026 through 2029.
CPS Energy in San Antonio, electric co-ops and other city utilities set their own solar rules and buyback rates. We check your utility's current program when we design your system.
Rates and programs as published in October 2026. They change, so we confirm the details for your home in your quote.
Incentives
What Texas homeowners can still use, and what changed this year.
Tax treatment varies. Consult a tax professional.
Under Texas Tax Code §11.27, the value a solar energy system adds to your home is exempt from property tax. File Form 50-123 with your county appraisal district to claim it.
Some city utilities set their own solar credits and programs. Austin Energy, for example, pays a Value of Solar credit and runs a battery program. We check what your utility offers.
Texas doesn't have a state income tax, so there's no state solar tax credit. Your savings come from lower electric bills.
Homeowners who buy a system no longer get a federal credit. With a lease, PPA or prepaid plan, the system owner can still claim the 30% credit and pass that value to you as a lower price. See how it works below.
Buyer protections
The Texas Residential Solar Retailer Regulatory Act gives homeowners new protections when they buy solar.
For contracts signed on or after September 1, 2025, you can cancel without penalty by giving written notice within five business days of signing.
Starting September 1, 2026, residential solar retailers and salespeople must register with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).
Your contract must name the licensed electrical contractor doing the installation and the last day you can cancel.
Lease, PPA and prepaid plans
Texas has no state solar tax credit, which makes the federal credit worth paying attention to. When a financing partner owns the system on your roof, it can still claim the 30% federal solar credit under Section 48E, and that value can come back to you as a lower monthly payment or a lower prepaid price.
The system owner claims the 30% credit and can pass the savings to you as a lower rate or a lower prepaid price. You don't claim anything on your own return.
Because you aren't the one claiming the credit, it works even if you owe little or no federal income tax.
Choose a monthly lease or PPA with no upfront cost, or a prepaid plan that covers the system with a single payment.
Monitoring and system service are included for the life of the agreement, so repairs aren't on you.
Battery storage has its own federal credit with no 2027 cutoff, so a lease or prepaid plan can lower the cost of a Powerwall or FranklinWH battery.
Long grid outages have made batteries a big part of going solar in Texas. A lease or prepaid plan can bring down the cost of adding one.
New solar must be in service by December 31, 2027 for the system owner to claim the federal credit; batteries have no 2027 cutoff. Terms vary by financing partner and address. Tax treatment varies. Consult a tax professional.
Battery storage
Winter storms and hurricanes have left Texans without power for days. A battery keeps your home running and makes your solar work harder.
Keep the fridge, lights, Wi-Fi and AC essentials running when the grid goes down.
Store midday solar instead of selling it back at a low buyback rate.
Some Texas retail electricity providers pay homes to share stored energy with the grid during high-demand periods.
How it works
We review your electric bills, roof and goals, then design a system sized to how your home actually uses power.
We handle city permits, HOA paperwork and interconnection with your utility, whether that's Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas, TNMP or a city utility.
We install your system and manage every step through final inspection.
After inspection, your utility approves the system to operate, and we help you set up monitoring and choose a buyback plan.
Service area
We install home solar and batteries in these Texas metro areas.

Answers on buyback plans, property taxes, contract rights, and batteries.
For many homeowners, yes. Texas sun and high summer cooling bills make solar a good fit, and the value solar adds to your home is exempt from property tax. How much you save depends on your utility or retail electricity provider, so we size your system and pick a buyback approach around your actual usage.
Not statewide. In deregulated areas, your retail electricity provider decides whether and how much to pay for exported solar through a buyback plan. City utilities and co-ops, like Austin Energy and CPS Energy, set their own solar programs.
Texas exempts the value solar adds to your home from property tax, and some city utilities, like Austin Energy, offer their own solar credits. Texas has no state income tax, so there's no state solar tax credit, and the homeowner credit for buying a system ended December 31, 2025. With a third-party ownership plan, such as a PPA or prepaid plan, the system owner can claim the 30% federal credit and pass that value to you as a lower price. Tax treatment varies. Consult a tax professional.
No. Under Texas Tax Code §11.27, the value a solar energy system adds to your home is exempt from property tax. You claim it by filing Form 50-123 with your county appraisal district.
Yes. For home solar contracts signed on or after September 1, 2025, Texas law lets you cancel without penalty by giving written notice within five business days of signing.
You don't need one, but many Texas homes add one. A battery keeps essentials running during outages, lets you use your own solar at night instead of exporting it at a low buyback rate, and some retail providers pay you to share stored energy with the grid.
Icon Power manages your project from design and permitting through installation, inspection and service, so one company is accountable for every Texas system we sell.
