Solar in Austin

Is solar worth it in Austin in 2026?

For many Austin homeowners, yes. Austin Energy, the city-owned utility, credits every kWh your panels produce at its Value of Solar rate, and the value solar adds to your home is exempt from property tax. Your utility

How Austin Energy credits solar

Austin isn't deregulated. Austin Energy sets how solar is credited, and its Value of Solar rate works differently from net metering.

Credit for everything you produce

Austin Energy credits every kWh your panels produce at the Value of Solar rate, 12.89 cents per kWh from October 2026 through 2029. You pay the regular rate for all the power your home uses.

Credits roll over

Value of Solar credits carry forward on your bill and don't expire, but they have no cash value.

Size it to your use

Value of Solar credits roll over but have no cash value, so a system sized to your yearly use gets the most from them. We design around your Austin Energy bills.

Austin Energy rates and programs change, so we confirm current terms and eligibility for your home in your quote.

Incentives

Solar incentives for Austin homeowners

What Austin homeowners can still use in 2026.

Tax treatment varies. Consult a tax professional.

Property tax exemption

Under Texas Tax Code §11.27, the value solar adds to your home is exempt from property tax. File Form 50-123 with the Travis Central Appraisal District, or your county's district, to claim it.

Value of Solar credit

Austin Energy credits every kWh your panels produce at 12.89 cents through 2029. Credits roll over on your bill and don't expire.

No state income tax

Texas doesn't have a state income tax, so there's no state solar tax credit. Your savings come from lower electric bills.

Federal tax credit

The federal residential solar credit (Section 25D) ended for homeowner-purchased systems on December 31, 2025. If you'd rather not pay upfront, ask about our no-upfront-cost monthly battery program.

Buyer protections

Your rights when you buy solar in Austin

The Texas Residential Solar Retailer Regulatory Act gives Austin homeowners new protections when they buy solar.

Five business days to cancel

For contracts signed on or after September 1, 2025, you can cancel without penalty by giving written notice within five business days of signing.

Registered sellers

Starting September 1, 2026, residential solar retailers and salespeople must register with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).

Clear contracts

Your contract must name the licensed electrical contractor doing the installation and the last day you can cancel.

Battery storage

Why Austin homes add a battery

The February 2023 ice storm cut power to about 170,000 Austin Energy customers at its peak. A battery keeps your home running when the grid goes down.

Backup through storms

Keep the fridge, lights, Wi-Fi and heating or cooling essentials running during ice storms and summer outages. Solar panels alone shut off during an outage.

Earn Power Partner payments

Austin Energy's Power Partner Battery pilot pays $500 up front plus ongoing payments for letting the utility draw on enrolled batteries during peak demand. Spots are limited.

Works with the batteries we install

The pilot accepts Tesla, FranklinWH, SolarEdge and Enphase batteries, including Tesla Powerwall 3 and FranklinWH systems.

Frequently asked questions

Austin solar questions, answered

Answers on Austin Energy's Value of Solar rate, batteries, property taxes and contract rights in Austin.

Is solar worth it in Austin in 2026?

For many homeowners, yes. Austin Energy credits every kWh your panels produce at its Value of Solar rate, and the value solar adds to your home is exempt from property tax. The best value comes from a system sized to your yearly use.

How does Austin Energy's Value of Solar rate work?

Instead of net metering, Austin Energy credits all the solar your panels produce at a set rate, 12.89 cents per kWh from October 2026 through 2029, while you pay the regular rate for all the power you use. Credits roll over and don't expire.

Will solar keep my power on during an ice storm?

Not by itself. Grid-tied solar panels shut off during an outage for safety. To keep power on, you need a battery such as a Tesla Powerwall 3 or FranklinWH.

Can I still get the federal solar tax credit?

Not for a system you buy. The federal residential solar credit (Section 25D) ended for homeowner-purchased systems on December 31, 2025. If your system was installed and operating by then, you claim it for the tax year it was placed in service. Texas has no state income tax, so there's no state solar credit. Tax treatment varies. Consult a tax professional.

Will solar raise my property taxes in Travis County?

No. Under Texas Tax Code §11.27, the value solar adds to your home is exempt from property tax. You claim it by filing Form 50-123 with your county appraisal district.

Can I cancel a solar contract in Texas?

Yes. For home solar contracts signed on or after September 1, 2025, Texas law lets you cancel without penalty by giving written notice within five business days of signing.

Do Value of Solar credits expire?

No. Value of Solar credits roll over from month to month and don't expire, but they have no cash value. That's why we size your system to your yearly use rather than making it as large as your roof allows.
