2026 TAX CREDIT UPDATE

The 30–50% Commercial Solar Tax Credit Ends in 2027

The federal Investment Tax Credit for commercial solar (Section 48E) starts at 30% of qualified project cost and can reach 50% with bonus credits for domestic content and energy communities. It covers panels, inverters, racking, battery storage installed with solar, and labor. Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, projects that began construction after July 4, 2026 must be placed in service by December 31, 2027 to qualify. Systems finished after that date receive no federal credit.

Commercial projects often take several months from contract to interconnection, so the practical window is shorter than it looks. If you're considering solar for your business, the time to start the conversation is now.

HOW MUCH YOU CAN SAVE

How Commercial Solar Pays for Itself

Businesses are better suited to solar than homes because most of their electricity use happens during daylight hours, when panels are producing. Every kilowatt-hour you generate on-site is one you don't buy at commercial rates.

The tax benefits add up quickly:

30% federal Investment Tax Credit – a dollar-for-dollar reduction in federal tax owed.

+10% domestic content bonus – for systems built with U.S.-made steel and iron and a required share of U.S.-made components.

+10% energy community bonus – for projects on brownfield sites or in areas tied to closed coal mines, retired coal plants, or fossil-fuel jobs.

100% bonus depreciation – deduct the system's depreciable basis in the first year instead of spreading it out.

State and local incentives – vary by state and utility territory; we'll identify what applies to your property.

Combined, the federal credit and first-year depreciation can recover roughly half of the project's cost for businesses with enough tax liability to use them. Most commercial systems we install pay for themselves in 4–6 years.

Disclaimer: This is general information, not tax advice. Bonus credits apply only to projects that meet IRS requirements, and projects 1 MW and larger must also meet prevailing wage and apprenticeship rules. Tax benefits depend on your entity type and tax liability. Consult your CPA or tax advisor.

WHY ICON POWER

One Company From Site Assessment to System Service

Commercial solar projects stall when responsibility is split among a salesperson, a design firm, an installer, and a monitoring company nobody can reach. At Icon Power, one team owns every step: engineering, permitting, utility interconnection, installation, and ongoing service.

We install Tesla, Qcells, REC, SolarEdge, and Enphase equipment, and we design around your actual utility rate schedule, including demand charges, which often make up a large share of a commercial electric bill. Battery storage can reduce those peaks and keep critical loads running during outages.

Frequently asked questions

Commercial Solar FAQs

Answers on tax credits, depreciation, cost, and project timelines.

Is the 30% commercial solar tax credit still available in 2026?

Yes, with a deadline. The Section 48E credit starts at 30% and can reach 50% with bonus credits for domestic content and energy communities. Commercial solar projects that began construction after July 4, 2026 must be placed in service by December 31, 2027 to qualify. Systems placed in service after that date receive no federal credit. The homeowner credit for buying a system is a separate program that ended December 31, 2025.

Can nonprofits, schools, and churches get the solar tax credit?

Yes. Tax-exempt organizations can claim the credit through elective pay (direct pay), in which the IRS pays the credit's value in cash instead of offsetting taxes the organization doesn't owe. Eligibility depends on meeting the same placed-in-service deadline.

How much does commercial solar cost?

Cost depends on system size, roof or ground-mount conditions, and whether battery storage is included. Most Icon Power commercial systems range from $50,000 to $500,000+, or about $2.20 to $2.80 per watt, before tax benefits. We provide a full financial model with every quote.

How long does a commercial solar installation take?

Most projects take 3 to 6 months from signed contract to placed in service, depending on system size, permitting, and the utility's interconnection timeline.

Can I depreciate a commercial solar system?

Yes. Solar and battery storage placed in service on or after January 19, 2025 qualify for 100% bonus depreciation, which allows businesses to deduct the system's depreciable basis in the first year. The depreciable basis is reduced by half of the ITC claimed.

What size business is commercial solar a good fit for?

Businesses with meaningful daytime electricity use and available roof, carport, or ground space are usually the best candidates. We install systems for small offices up to large warehouses and multi-family properties.
