Solar in San Antonio

Is solar worth it in San Antonio in 2026?

For many San Antonio homeowners, yes, but San Antonio works differently from most of Texas. CPS Energy, the city-owned utility, serves the area, so you can't shop for a buyback plan. CPS credits extra solar at a low rate, which means the solar you use at home, or store in a battery, is where most of the savings come from.

Your utility

How CPS Energy credits solar in San Antonio

San Antonio isn't deregulated, so CPS Energy sets the rules for every rooftop system in its territory.

Monthly netting

Solar that offsets your usage each month reduces your bill at your full rate. That's where most of your savings come from.

Low credit for the extra

Extra solar you send to the grid is credited at a low seasonal rate, around 1.65 cents per kWh from October to May and 2.02 cents from June to September in CPS Energy's 2024 billing guide. Credits roll over to your next bill.

No plan shopping

Because CPS Energy is the only provider, you can't switch to a solar buyback plan. That makes sizing your system to your own usage, often with a battery, more important.

CPS Energy rates and programs change, so we confirm current terms for your home in your quote.

Incentives

Solar incentives for San Antonio homeowners

What San Antonio homeowners can still use in 2026.

Tax treatment varies. Consult a tax professional.

Property tax exemption

Under Texas Tax Code §11.27, the value solar adds to your home is exempt from property tax. File Form 50-123 with the Bexar Appraisal District, or your county's district, to claim it.

CPS Energy programs

CPS Energy closed its residential solar rebate to new applications in December 2022 and doesn't currently offer one for homes. Its My Battery Rewards program pays bill credits for sharing stored energy during grid emergencies.

No state income tax

Texas doesn't have a state income tax, so there's no state solar tax credit. Your savings come from lower electric bills.

Federal tax credit

The federal residential solar credit (Section 25D) ended for homeowner-purchased systems on December 31, 2025. If you'd rather not pay upfront, ask about our no-upfront-cost monthly battery program.

Buyer protections

Your rights when you buy solar in San Antonio

The Texas Residential Solar Retailer Regulatory Act gives San Antonio homeowners new protections when they buy solar.

Five business days to cancel

For contracts signed on or after September 1, 2025, you can cancel without penalty by giving written notice within five business days of signing.

Registered sellers

Starting September 1, 2026, residential solar retailers and salespeople must register with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).

Clear contracts

Your contract must name the licensed electrical contractor doing the installation and the last day you can cancel.

Battery storage

Why San Antonio homes add a battery

Winter Storm Uri left nearly half a million San Antonio-area customers without power in February 2021. A battery keeps your home running and makes your solar work harder.

Backup through storms

Keep the fridge, lights, Wi-Fi and heating or cooling essentials running when the grid goes down. Solar panels alone shut off during an outage.

Use your own solar at night

Store midday solar for the evening instead of sending it to CPS Energy for a low credit.

Earn CPS bill credits

CPS Energy's My Battery Rewards program pays a $10 bill credit for each grid emergency event your enrolled battery supports.

Frequently asked questions

San Antonio solar questions, answered

Answers on CPS Energy, batteries, property taxes and contract rights in San Antonio.

Is solar worth it in San Antonio in 2026?

For many homeowners, yes. San Antonio's long cooling season makes solar a good fit, and the value solar adds to your home is exempt from property tax. Because CPS Energy credits extra solar at a low rate, the best value comes from a system sized to your own use, often with a battery.

Can I choose my electricity provider in San Antonio?

No. San Antonio isn't part of Texas's deregulated market. CPS Energy, the city-owned utility, serves homes in its territory and sets how solar is credited.

Will solar keep my power on during an outage?

Not by itself. Grid-tied solar panels shut off during an outage for safety. To keep power on, you need a battery such as a Tesla Powerwall 3 or FranklinWH.

Can I still get the federal solar tax credit?

Not for a system you buy. The federal residential solar credit (Section 25D) ended for homeowner-purchased systems on December 31, 2025. If your system was installed and operating by then, you claim it for the tax year it was placed in service. Texas has no state income tax, so there's no state solar credit. Tax treatment varies. Consult a tax professional.

Will solar raise my property taxes in Bexar County?

No. Under Texas Tax Code §11.27, the value solar adds to your home is exempt from property tax. You claim it by filing Form 50-123 with your county appraisal district.

Can I cancel a solar contract in Texas?

Yes. For home solar contracts signed on or after September 1, 2025, Texas law lets you cancel without penalty by giving written notice within five business days of signing.

Does CPS Energy offer a solar rebate?

Not for homes right now. CPS Energy closed its residential solar rebate to new applications in December 2022. We check for any new programs when we design your system.
