Solar in Katy

Is solar worth it in Katy in 2026?

For many Katy homeowners, yes. Hot, humid summers keep the AC running for months, and many Katy homes are newer builds with good roof space. Most Katy homes are in CenterPoint's deregulated area, so your retail provider's buyback plan shapes your savings.

Buyback

How solar buyback works in Katy

Most Katy homes get power delivered by CenterPoint and choose a retail electricity provider, and that provider sets what you earn for extra solar. Some homes in the area are served by an electric co-op instead.

Deregulated areas

Your retail electricity provider decides what it pays for exported solar. Buyback plans range from fixed credits to wholesale-based rates, and some plans don't pay at all.

Electric co-ops

Co-ops set their own solar interconnection rules and buyback rates. We check your co-op's current program when we design your system.

Use it first

Solar you use as it's produced offsets power you'd otherwise buy at your full retail rate, so it's usually worth more than solar you export.

Plans and rates change, so we confirm the current options for your home in your quote.

Incentives

Solar incentives for Katy homeowners

What Katy homeowners can still use in 2026.

Tax treatment varies. Consult a tax professional.

Property tax exemption

Under Texas Tax Code §11.27, the value solar adds to your home is exempt from property tax. File Form 50-123 with the Harris, Fort Bend or Waller County appraisal district, depending on where your home sits.

Buyback credits

If you're in a deregulated area, your retail provider's buyback plan is how exported solar earns credit. Terms vary widely, so we compare plans with you.

No state income tax

Texas doesn't have a state income tax, so there's no state solar tax credit. Your savings come from lower electric bills.

Federal tax credit

The federal residential solar credit (Section 25D) ended for homeowner-purchased systems on December 31, 2025. If you'd rather not pay upfront, ask about our no-upfront-cost monthly battery program.

Buyer protections

Your rights when you buy solar in Katy

The Texas Residential Solar Retailer Regulatory Act gives Katy homeowners new protections when they buy solar.

Five business days to cancel

For contracts signed on or after September 1, 2025, you can cancel without penalty by giving written notice within five business days of signing.

Registered sellers

Starting September 1, 2026, residential solar retailers and salespeople must register with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).

Clear contracts

Your contract must name the licensed electrical contractor doing the installation and the last day you can cancel.

Battery storage

Why Katy homes add a battery

Hurricanes and winter storms have left Katy-area homes without power for days. A battery keeps your home running and makes your solar work harder.

Backup through storms

Keep the fridge, lights, Wi-Fi and AC essentials running when the grid goes down. Solar panels alone shut off during an outage.

Use your own solar at night

Store midday solar instead of selling it back at a low buyback rate.

Earn from your battery

Some Texas retail electricity providers pay homes to share stored energy with the grid during high-demand periods.

Frequently asked questions

Katy solar questions, answered

Answers on buyback plans, property taxes, HOAs, batteries and contract rights in Katy.

Is solar worth it in Katy in 2026?

For many homeowners, yes. Katy's long cooling season makes solar a good fit, and the value solar adds to your home is exempt from property tax. How much you save depends on your buyback plan or co-op, so we size your system around your actual usage.

Does my electricity provider affect my solar savings?

Yes. In CenterPoint's deregulated area, your retail electricity provider decides whether and how much it pays for exported solar. If you're served by a co-op, the co-op sets the rules. We review your options as part of our process.

Which appraisal district do I file the solar exemption with?

It depends on where your home is. Katy spans Harris, Fort Bend and Waller counties, so you file Form 50-123 with that county's appraisal district. Under Texas Tax Code §11.27, the value solar adds to your home is exempt from property tax.

Will my HOA let me install solar?

Texas law generally doesn't let HOAs ban solar panels, though they can set some rules on placement. We prepare and submit the HOA application for you.

Will solar keep my power on during a storm?

Not by itself. Grid-tied solar panels shut off during an outage for safety. To keep power on, you need a battery such as a Tesla Powerwall 3 or FranklinWH.

Can I still get the federal solar tax credit?

Not for a system you buy. The federal residential solar credit (Section 25D) ended for homeowner-purchased systems on December 31, 2025. If your system was installed and operating by then, you claim it for the tax year it was placed in service. Texas has no state income tax, so there's no state solar credit. Tax treatment varies. Consult a tax professional.

Can I cancel a solar contract in Texas?

Yes. For home solar contracts signed on or after September 1, 2025, Texas law lets you cancel without penalty by giving written notice within five business days of signing.
