Solar in Dallas–Fort Worth

Is solar worth it in Dallas–Fort Worth in 2026?

For many DFW homeowners, yes, but the details depend on your electricity plan. Most of the metroplex is deregulated, with Oncor delivering power, so your retail electricity provider decides what it pays for the solar you export. Long, hot summers and spring storm outages also make a battery a big part of going solar here.

Buyback

How solar buyback works in Dallas–Fort Worth

In most of DFW, Oncor owns the poles and wires, but your retail electricity provider sets your rate and decides what it pays for extra solar. Picking the right plan matters as much as picking the right panels.

Buyback plans vary

Some providers credit exported solar at a fixed rate, some pay a wholesale-based rate, and some plans don't pay for exports at all. We review your options before you sign.

Use it first

Solar you use as it's produced offsets power you'd otherwise buy at your full retail rate, so it's usually worth more than solar you export.

Some cities are different

Garland and Denton run their own electric utilities, and some suburbs are served by co-ops such as CoServ, where solar credits work differently. We confirm your utility by address before we design.

Plans and rates change, so we confirm the current options for your home in your quote.

Incentives

Solar incentives for DFW homeowners

What Dallas–Fort Worth homeowners can still use in 2026.

Tax treatment varies. Consult a tax professional.

Property tax exemption

Under Texas Tax Code §11.27, the value solar adds to your home is exempt from property tax. File Form 50-123 with your county appraisal district, such as Dallas, Tarrant, Collin or Denton, to claim it.

Buyback credits

In Oncor territory, your retail provider's buyback plan is how exported solar earns credit. Terms vary widely, so we compare plans with you.

No state income tax

Texas doesn't have a state income tax, so there's no state solar tax credit. Your savings come from lower electric bills.

Federal tax credit

The federal residential solar credit (Section 25D) ended for homeowner-purchased systems on December 31, 2025. If you'd rather not pay upfront, ask about our no-upfront-cost monthly battery program.

Buyer protections

Your rights when you buy solar in Dallas–Fort Worth

The Texas Residential Solar Retailer Regulatory Act gives DFW homeowners new protections when they buy solar.

Five business days to cancel

For contracts signed on or after September 1, 2025, you can cancel without penalty by giving written notice within five business days of signing.

Registered sellers

Starting September 1, 2026, residential solar retailers and salespeople must register with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).

Clear contracts

Your contract must name the licensed electrical contractor doing the installation and the last day you can cancel.

Battery storage

Why DFW homes add a battery

Severe storms on May 28, 2024 knocked out power to more than 500,000 North Texas customers. A battery keeps your home running and makes your solar work harder.

Backup through storms

Keep the fridge, lights, Wi-Fi and AC essentials running when storms or ice take down the grid. Solar panels alone shut off during an outage.

Use your own solar at night

Store midday solar instead of selling it back at a low buyback rate.

Earn from your battery

Some Texas retail electricity providers pay homes to share stored energy with the grid during high-demand periods.

Frequently asked questions

Dallas–Fort Worth solar questions, answered

Answers on buyback plans, utilities, property taxes, batteries and contract rights in DFW.

Is solar worth it in Dallas–Fort Worth in 2026?

For many homeowners, yes. DFW's long cooling season makes solar a good fit, and the value solar adds to your home is exempt from property tax. How much you save depends on your utility and your retail provider's buyback plan, so we size your system around your actual usage.

Does my electricity provider affect my solar savings?

Yes. In Oncor territory, your retail electricity provider decides whether and how much it pays for exported solar. If you're in a city with its own utility, like Garland or Denton, or on a co-op like CoServ, that utility sets the rules. We confirm which applies to your address.

Will solar keep my power on during a storm?

Not by itself. Grid-tied solar panels shut off during an outage for safety. To keep power on, you need a battery such as a Tesla Powerwall 3 or FranklinWH.

Can I still get the federal solar tax credit?

Not for a system you buy. The federal residential solar credit (Section 25D) ended for homeowner-purchased systems on December 31, 2025. If your system was installed and operating by then, you claim it for the tax year it was placed in service. Texas has no state income tax, so there's no state solar credit. Tax treatment varies. Consult a tax professional.

Will solar raise my property taxes in DFW?

No. Under Texas Tax Code §11.27, the value solar adds to your home is exempt from property tax. You claim it by filing Form 50-123 with your county appraisal district.

Can I cancel a solar contract in Texas?

Yes. For home solar contracts signed on or after September 1, 2025, Texas law lets you cancel without penalty by giving written notice within five business days of signing.
