How to Activate Your Tesla Powerwall 3

Congratulations on your new Tesla Powerwall 3 system!
Follow the steps below to safely and successfully turn everything on and begin enjoying clean, reliable energy.

Step 1: Turn On the Breaker in Your Main Electric Panel #

  • Open your main electrical panel.

  • Locate the system breaker, typically found in the bottom left or bottom right corner.

  • Look for a breaker labeled PV or Photovoltaic.

  • Flip this breaker into the ON position.

Step 2: Flip the Disconnect Switches On #

  • Locate the disconnect boxes mounted outside, next to your main panel.

  • These boxes have a vertical lever.

  • Flip the lever from the OFF position to the ON position.

Step 3: Turn On the Breaker in the Tesla Gateway #

(Only if your system includes a Tesla Gateway)

  • If you have a Tesla Gateway installed, open it to access the internal breaker.

  • Flip the breaker inside the Gateway to the ON position.

Note: If your system uses Tesla’s Backup Switch instead of a Gateway, you can skip this step.

Step 4: Power Up the Combiner Panel #

(Only for systems with multiple Powerwalls)

  • Go to the area where your Powerwalls are installed (this might be outside, in the garage, or another part of your home).

  • Locate the Powerwall Combiner Panel — a small sub-panel with breakers.

  • Open the panel and make sure each individual breaker inside is in the ON position.

    • There will be one breaker per Powerwall.

Step 5: Turn On Additional Disconnects (If Present) #

  • Check near the Powerwalls for additional disconnect boxes (similar to those from Step 2).

  • These are often installed near garage-mounted or remote Powerwall systems.

  • Flip any of these levers into the ON position.

Step 6: Turn On the Powerwall(s) #

  • On the left side of each Powerwall, locate the ON/OFF switch.

  • Flip open the small cover and turn the switch to the ON position.

  • Repeat for each Powerwall you have.

Once powered on, you should see the Tesla “T” logo light up on the battery.
This confirms your Powerwall system is now active.

Final Step: Set Up the Tesla App #

  • Download the Tesla app on your smartphone.

  • Your Powerwall system is registered to the email you provided during installation.

  • You should have received a registration email from Tesla.

If you didn’t receive the email:

  • Create a Tesla account using the same email address we have on file.

  • If you’re still unable to view your system in the app, please contact support.
