Quick Reference Checklist
- Turn on system breaker
- Turn on all disconnects
- Turn on combiner panel breakers (multi battery systems only)
- Turn on breakers inside Tesla Gateway (only if applicable)
- Turn on Powerwall 3 battery unit(s)
- Verify the Powerwall light turns on
- Download and set up the Tesla app
Step 1: Turn On System Breaker
Location: Inside your main electrical panel
Open your main electrical panel and find the breaker labeled
PV (this stands for photovoltaic, which is your solar system).
Flip this breaker to the ON position.
This breaker is what allows electricity to flow to your solar and battery equipment.

Step 2: Turn On All Disconnects
Location: Near your main electrical panel and/or near your batteries
The system disconnects are gray boxes with a handle on the front.
To turn them on, flip the handle UP with some force.
Most homes will have one to three disconnect boxes.

Step 3: Turn On Breakers Inside the Combiner Panel
Step 3 is only for systems with multiple Powerwall 3 batteries.
Skip this step if you have one battery.
Location: Near your batteries
Look for a smaller gray electrical panel mounted near your batteries.
This is called a combiner panel.
Open it and flip all breakers inside to the ON position.
You will typically see one breaker for each battery.

Step 4: Turn On Breakers Inside Tesla Gateway
Step 4 is only for systems with a Tesla Gateway.
Skip this step if your system was installed with a Backup Switch (Meter Collar).
Location: Near your batteries or next to your main electrical panel
The Gateway is a white box with the Tesla logo on the front.
To open it, release the latch on the right side and swing the door open.
Inside, verify that all breakers are switched to ON.
Not sure which you have?
Check the installation photos provided at the time of install.

Step 5: Turn On Powerwall 3 Battery Unit(s)
Location: Left side of each Powerwall 3
Find the small plastic cover on the left side of your Powerwall 3.
Behind it is a power switch.
Flip it to turn the battery ON.
If you have multiple Powerwall 3 units, repeat this step for each battery.
If you have Expansion Packs, these do not have a power switch and will turn on automatically.
Note: If the plastic cover is difficult to open,
use a flat head screwdriver to gently pry it loose.

Step 6: Verify the Powerwall’s Light Turns On
Location: On the front glass of the Powerwall
After turning on the power switch, look at the Tesla “T” logo on the front of your Powerwall 3.
It should light up white.
You may see it flash red or white briefly at first.
This is normal.
It should settle to a steady white glow.
Note: Expansion Packs do not have a light,
so only your Powerwall 3 unit(s) will illuminate.

Step 7: Download the Tesla App
The Tesla app lets you monitor your system’s performance from your phone.
To set up your account:
- Download the Tesla app from the iOS App Store or Google Play
- Look for a registration invitation from Tesla sent via text or email
on your installation date - Follow the prompts to create your account and connect to your system
Can’t find the invitation?
Create a Tesla account using the same email address you have on file with Icon Power.
Your system will be registered to that exact email.
After You Receive Permission to Operate (PTO)
Once your utility grants permission to operate,
complete this final step in the Tesla app to unlock your system’s full production.
- Open the Tesla app and go to Settings
- Tap Powerwall
- Scroll to Permission to Export
- Set it to Yes
